The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Quasar Drop XY arrived in 2019 from the O Boticário creative team, perfumers Hernan Fígoli, Marion Costero, and Leandro Petit building a fragrance around an unexpected ingredient: eucalyptus. Not a supporting note here, a statement. The camphorated freshness cuts through the citrus and aromatic structure, giving the scent a distinctly Brazilian character. Star anise and ginger add warmth and spice. Geranium softens the approach before the base reveals cedar, cypriol, and vetiver grounded by labdanum, with amber, nutmeg, and cashmeran wrapping everything in lingering warmth. The name suggests something celestial, but the execution is firmly rooted in the rainforest.
The camphorated eucalyptus opening is the structural oddity here, most aromatic fougères reach for lavender as their cool anchor. Quasar Drop XY reaches past it. Star anise in the top notes adds a faint licorice warmth that keeps the opening from reading purely medicinal, while ginger and mandarin orange provide the citrus brightness expected of the genre. The base is where the composition earns its complexity: cypriol oil (nagarmotha) brings an earthy, almost smoky depth that cedar and vetiver amplify, while labdanum and amber add a warm resinous quality that rounds the drydown into something close and intimate rather than loud.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, eucalyptus and star anise arrive together, sharp and camphorated, with bergamot and lemon brightening the top. Mandarin orange adds a brief sweetness before the citrus settles. Within ten minutes the eucalyptus begins to soften, the geranium emerging to inject green floral warmth into the structure. The camphorated quality doesn't disappear, it deepens, settling into the composition like a quiet hum beneath the surface. By the heart phase, cedar starts asserting itself, its dry woody character pushing against the floral geranium. Vetiver and patchouli build underneath, earthy and slightly bitter. The drydown is vetiver-dominant, clean, earthy, camphorated in its own way, with cedar, amber, and cashmeran wrapping everything in warmth. Cypriol and labdanum linger in the background, adding a resinous depth that stays close to the skin for the remaining hours.
Cultural impact
Quasar Drop XY sits comfortably within the aromatic fougère tradition, but the camphorated eucalyptus opening gives it an uncommon edge. The combination of eucalyptus, cypriol, and geranium asserts itself without apology. The fragrance avoids the familiar lavender anchor typical of the style, instead reaching for something sharper and more distinctive. This boldness in the top and heart creates a scent that stands apart from conventional fougère structures.
