The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Portinari was one of O Boticário's defining masculine scents, a 2014 original built on the citrus-woody fougère structure that the brand has always handled well. The 2025 return, Portinari Memórias, doesn't arrive to replace nostalgia but to give it new form. O Boticário built its identity in a Brazilian pharmacy in 1977, drawing on local botanists and regional ecosystems to create scents rooted in the country's own landscape rather than imported traditions. Portinari Memórias 2025 continues that lineage, bergamot, green apple, clove, rosemary, vetiver, cedar, sandalwood. A reimagining for someone who remembers the original, and for someone who's finding it for the first time.
The note pyramid follows a classic masculine fougère arc, citrus opening, aromatic-spicy heart, woody base, but every tier carries something distinctly tropical. Davana in the top adds an herbal-fruity complexity that sets it apart from the typical Mediterranean citrus burst. The heart's tonka bean keeps sweetness from getting lost in the clove and cinnamon warmth. And the base of vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli gives the drydown real depth, creating a woody foundation that anchors the brighter opening notes and gives the fragrance its distinctive character.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart. Bergamot, lemon, green apple, a citrus-fruity burst that arrives fast and reads clean. Davana threads in quietly, adding an herbal complexity that prevents the start from feeling straightforward or generic. As the top notes recede, the heart opens with a classic fougère structure. Clove, rosemary, cinnamon, and nutmeg appear as distinct but harmonious elements, rosemary brings an aromatic edge, clove adds warmth, while cinnamon and nutmeg layer in a subtle spiciness that rounds out the middle. Tonka bean sweetens the deal just enough to keep the heart from reading as purely herbal. The interplay between these four heart notes creates a spicy-aromatic character that feels both traditional and contemporary. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name.
Cultural impact
Portinari Memórias 2025 offers the structure of a classic masculine scent built around a citrus-woody backbone. The fragrance combines traditional fougère elements with a distinctly contemporary sensibility, balancing aromatic freshness with warm woody depth. The composition takes inspiration from tropical botanicals, incorporating davana to add herbal-fruity complexity that distinguishes the opening from more conventional citrus fragrances. The woody base grounds the scent with vetiver, cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli, creating a foundation that brings warmth and earthiness to the overall composition.
