The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nikos Apostolopoulos founded his Paris house in 1985, channeling Greek sculptural heritage into gender-fluid fragrance design. For Sculpture, perfumer Alienor Massenet drew inspiration from classical marble and Mediterranean light, building structure through contrasting elements. The composition opens with bright, cool florals and citrus that evoke sunlit stone, then moves into a powdery iris heart that mirrors the smooth planes of marble sculpture. The warm, resinous drydown represents the lasting impression left by great art, lingering on skin like a memory of a museum visit at golden hour.
The note selection in Sculpture reflects a deliberate philosophy of balance. Freesia and green notes provide an initial coolness that mirrors the surface of marble, while peach and tarragon add unexpected depth. The iris-heavy heart demonstrates Massenet's commitment to classical perfumery materials, choosing depth and complexity over fleeting trends. The drydown pairs benzoin with tonka bean and vanilla, creating a sweet, resinous base that complements the cooler opening without overwhelming it. Together, these notes create a fragrance that feels like a complete work of art, each element supporting the others in a carefully considered structure.
The evolution
The opening of Sculpture establishes a delicate tension between freesias and citrus oils, with lemon and bergamot creating an immediate impression of cleanliness and clarity. Green notes and tarragon interrupt the sweetness just enough to prevent the composition from feeling too soft. As the minutes pass, iris claims the center stage, supported by cyclamen and lily of the valley, which add freshness without competing with the star note. Jasmine and ylang-ylang appear later in the heart, introducing a tropical richness that bridges the transition to the base. By the time musk, sandalwood, and benzoin arrive, the fragrance has completed its evolution from a cool, sculptural opening to a warm, enveloping finish that feels both modern and timeless.
Cultural impact
Sculpture Parfum, launched in 2022, arrives at a moment when gender‑fluid fragrances are gaining cultural prominence, reflecting a broader shift toward inclusivity in the perfume world. Its citrus‑floral composition nods to classic Mediterranean aromas while embracing modern minimalism, resonating with younger consumers who value artistic expression over traditional gendered marketing. The fragrance’s design, inspired by sculptural forms, aligns with contemporary art movements that blur the lines between functional objects and aesthetic statements. By integrating orange blossom and mandarin with a warm amber‑tonka drydown, the perfume bridges the gap between daylight freshness and evening sophistication, mirroring the duality present in today’s urban lifestyle.
