The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Couteux is a release from MPF, also known as My Perfumes Factory, and it occupies a distinctive corner of the house's catalog. Where some of the brand's compositions lean into heavier, resinous territory, this one takes a different path. The composition reads as a study in contrasts, pairing bright fruity-floral material at the top with a deeply earthy base built on birch and oakmoss. The pineapple, apple, and blackcurrant opening is clean and generous, the kind of fruity introduction that signals approachability. Below it, the smoky bitterness of birch and the damp green weight of oakmoss anchor everything in something darker and more contemplative. It is a fragrance that asks the fruity top to earn its place against a foundation that doesn't want to be overwhelmed.
What makes the pyramid interesting is the tension between the top and base. Pineapple, apple, and blackcurrant are a bright opening, the kind of notes that read as generous and easy from the first spray. Pair them with birch, patchouli, and oakmoss underneath, though, and the composition pushes back against its own opening. Birch in particular brings a smoky, leather-adjacent bitterness that grounds the fruit before it can read as simple.
The evolution
The opening belongs to fruit. Pineapple and blackcurrant lead, with bergamot brightening the edges and apple softening the corners. It smells generous and easy from the first spray, a polished brightness that doesn't strain for attention. As the composition develops, birch arrives quietly, darkening the edges of the fruit and turning the brightness from citrus-clean into something closer to woodsmoke on a cold morning. Moroccan jasmine and rose surface in the heart, but they serve as texture rather than stars, a floral midpoint that keeps the composition from collapsing straight into earth. The rose is almost bruised, a stained-petal quality rather than a clean bouquet, and the jasmine adds an indolic sweetness that weaves through the smoke without ever announcing itself as a floral accord. Eventually, the oakmoss and patchouli take over.
Cultural impact
Couteux sits closer to the accessible fruity-woody end of the spectrum, and it tends to attract wearers looking for chypre structure without leaning fully into either classical European perfumery or heavier resinous territory. On Fragrantica, the fragrance appears in the 'People who like this also like' lists alongside Creed Aventus, a comparison driven largely by the shared pineapple-and-birch conversation at the heart of both compositions. The two fragrances share a structural resemblance in their fruit-versus-earth tension, though Couteux positions the contrast differently, softer in its smoke and rounder in its drydown.
