The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
When Mona di Orio set out to expand its Alinea collection in 2019, the house turned to Fredrik Dalman to capture a distinctly Dutch spring. Inspired by the Netherlands iconic tulip fields and the brand's love of contrast, light versus shadow, the perfumer crafted a scent that feels like a walk through those legendary fields. Rather than building from a traditional opening, Dalman chose to eliminate the prelude entirely, allowing the wearer to step directly into the heart of the composition.
The note philosophy here is one of reduction and focus. By eliminating opening and base notes, Dalman insists that the heart notes, green notes and tulip, must carry the entire weight of the fragrance experience. This approach requires extracting maximum complexity from a limited palette, and the result rewards close attention. The green notes provide an anchor that prevents the tulip from becoming merely another floral, while the tulip gives the green notes a poetic identity beyond simple vegetation. Tog ether they create something unusual, a fragrance that is neither complex nor simple but deeply intentional in its botanical purity.
The evolution
The journey of Semper Augustus rejects conventional fragrance structure. Without opening notes to announce its presence, the scent opens directly into green notes and tulip, creating an immediate immersion in botanical space. The first minutes present green notes in their most essential form, a fresh and almost photographic quality that recalls the sensation of stepping between rows of flowers. As time passes, the tulip note asserts itself more clearly, its delicate petals emerging from the green backdrop like flowers lifting toward light. The transition through the wearing experience is subtle, not the dramatic shifts of traditional fragrances but a gradual softening as the tulip note gently recedes. There is no distinct drydown phase because the entire experience is essentially the drydown, a slow diminishment of the heart that begins the moment the scent touches skin and continues until the final trace of green fades away.
Cultural impact
Since its 2019 debut, Semper Augustus has become a quiet favorite among niche enthusiasts who prize understated green‑floral compositions. Its inclusion in the Alinea line reinforced the house’s reputation for artful contrasts, and the fragrance is often cited in community discussions as a refined alternative to louder garden scents.
