Why it exists.
The beginning
Jasmine & Sun Rose arrived in 2020 as part of Molton Brown's continued push into fragrance. The perfumer behind it, Julie Pluchet, set out to let two of perfumery's most written-about flowers play against something fruitier and less expected. Raspberry leaf opens the door, bringing a green, slightly bitter herbal quality that pulls away from pure sweetness. Jasmine and rose take the conversation somewhere more textured, layered and weighted rather than airy. Labdanum absolute sits at the heart, hinting that this isn't meant to be a pretty bouquet. It's a floral with structure, something resinous anchoring the petals and keeping the whole composition from drifting into something purely decorative.
What's striking here is the raspberry leaf placement. Raspberry leaf brings a greener, more herbal quality, almost like the stem and the leaf rather than the berry. It gives the opening a slight bitterness that keeps the fruit from sliding into candy territory. The leaf reads almost vegetal at first spritz, a raw and leafy quality that sets up what follows. Pluchet pairs this with davana, a note that adds a liqueur-like warmth to the opening. Davana carries its own fruity edge, almost fermented, and it sits comfortably alongside the raspberry leaf without competing with it.
The evolution
The opening is dominated by blackcurrant and raspberry leaf, with bergamot adding a clean edge that keeps things from feeling sticky. There's a faint alcoholic warmth from the davana that reads more like fruit liqueur than juice. Then the jasmine arrives, and it doesn't ask permission. It pushes the fruit back without erasing it, so what lingers is something that smells like raspberry jam folded into a creamy white flower. Rose threads through, but jasmine is the lead voice here. Over time, the labdanum settles in, giving the heart a warm, resinous undertone that smells like sun-warmed wood. The base of patchouli, tonka bean, and musk takes over as hours pass. The patchouli here is smooth, not earthy or aggressive, and the tonka adds a vanilla-adjacent sweetness that keeps the whole composition feeling approachable.
