The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Qessence arrived in 2011 as a milestone: the first fragrance from Perfumery Quality Missala, created to mark the house's twentieth anniversary. The brief was personal: capture the positive emotions fragrance had given her over the years and pass them on. The composition was designed in Grasse, world capital of perfume, in collaboration with French perfumer Jean-Claude Astier. The result is a layered, sophisticated scent that unfolds beautifully on the skin, beginning with bright, energizing top notes before revealing deeper, more contemplative dimensions. Each stage of development feels intentional, crafted with care and an understanding of how fragrance can evoke memory and mood.
The note list reads like a greatest-hits collection of perfumery's most coveted materials: oud, frankincense, patchouli, saffron, iris, rose, jasmine, sandalwood, vetiver, vanilla. But it's the architecture that makes Qessence interesting, not just the ingredients themselves, but how they interact across time. The interplay between warm and cool, bitter and sweet, floral and resinous. Each layer doesn't simply follow the last; it builds on what came before, creating a composition that reveals new dimensions on the second wear.
The evolution
The opening is a warm wave, saffron and coriander leading, with orange lifting the spice just enough to keep it from overwhelming. This phase is bold. If you're paying attention, you'll notice it. The transition to the heart is gradual: the citrus recedes, the florals emerge. Damask rose absolute doesn't announce itself, it settles in beside jasmine and ylang-ylang, all three softened by iris. The spice never fully disappears; it becomes part of the background texture rather than the foreground. As the fragrance develops, the base arrives with quiet confidence. Oud and frankincense arrive together, joined by patchouli, labdanum, and vanilla. The drydown stays close to the skin but lingers for hours, wrapping the wearer in a warm, resinous embrace that reveals new facets the longer you experience it.
Cultural impact
Qessence channels a rich blend of ingredients with deep cultural resonance. Saffron brings its distinctive, slightly medicinal sweetness and vivid color that has made it prized across many traditions. Coriander and cinnamon contribute warm, spicy dimensions that connect the scent to broader spice traditions. The orange and chamomile add bright, soothing qualities that bring balance and Mediterranean warmth to the blend. Marigold, or calendula, introduces a subtle herbal facet that rounds out the composition.
