The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Michael Storer turned his attention to scent. He created several fragrances, among them Djin, Stephanie, Yvette, and Geneviève, with himself as creator and nose. Monk became the most personal statement among them: an incense-forward oriental that explored what happens when discipline meets desire. The name was the concept. The fragrance was the argument. It stands apart from his other work, carrying a weight and intentionality that feels almost spiritual in its construction, as if the scent itself were a form of practice and devotion.
The combination of beeswax and benzoin gives Monk a waxy, devotional quality. Beeswax acts as a binder, holding the top and heart together while adding a honeyed warmth that brings a rich, almost sacred character to the composition. The civet and birch tar in the base are smoky and animalic, adding a darkness that balances the sweetness. This is not a safe composition. It is a committed one. The contrast between the sticky sweetness of the opening and the primal edge of the base creates a tension that rewards patience.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, bergamot and bitter orange with an unexpected waxy green from the galbanum. It is bright before the heart takes over. Incense and beeswax arrive together, and something shifts. The rose is not obvious; it is structural, holding the smoke in place. Hours pass like this, incense and warmth trading dominance. When the drydown finally arrives, the civet and birch tar come forward, the animalic truth beneath the beautiful surface. Then sandalwood and vanilla-tonka warm everything, the vanilla lasting longest as it warms on skin. The progression feels inevitable, each stage preparing the wearer for what comes next.
Cultural impact
Monk carved a quiet space in the niche landscape with its incense-forward oriental character and uncommon beeswax-animalic base. The name, Monk, suggests discipline, but the fragrance itself has genuine presence, making it a reference point for those seeking incense without aggression and animalic without shock. It offers something different from the expected, a scent that rewards attention and patience rather than making an immediate demand.
