The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Modern Poet is a fragrance built around the interplay of sharp and soft. Elodie Durande created this scent with an unconventional opening: gin with its juniper and herbal character brings a bracing clarity that cuts through the usual citrus expectations. Citron and grapefruit provide bright, zesty energy while the juniper adds an unexpected depth. As the scent develops, greenery notes emerge, threading through the composition with quiet intention. The base brings earthiness that grounds the fragrance without heaviness. The result is a scent that announces itself with confidence, then gradually reveals its layers as it settles on the skin.
The gin-matcha pairing is the structural surprise here. Gin brings juniper's clean bitterness and a faint alcohol warmth; matcha adds a green, slightly bitter depth that reads almost meditative rather than refreshing. Neither dominates. They negotiate. The citrus, citron, grapefruit, lemon, amplifies the gin without drowning it, while frankincense adds a resinous counterweight that keeps everything grounded. By the time the earthy base arrives, the composition has traveled from bar counter to mountain trail without ever losing its composure.
The evolution
The first five minutes are the gin opening, sharp, bright, a little bracing. Citron and grapefruit carry the citrus load while the juniper announces itself confidently. Then the matcha arrives, green and quieter, threading through the citrus like a comma in a sentence. The geranium and cardamom warm the heart without sweetening it. By hour two, the vetiver and patchouli take over, earthy, slightly smoky, intimate. The drydown settles into a close, personal warmth that lingers.
Cultural impact
Modern Poet landed in 2024 as part of the Esquire collection. The gin-matcha opening caught attention, offering a different kind of experience than the usual fragrance fare. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
