Confusion arrived in 2020 as part of a compact lineup of five compositions under the MaxMatto label, the same collection that includes Ambre Intense, Nero, Oud Smoke, and Rose Oud. The name isn't decorative. Confusion leans into densely textured materials like oud, rose, amber, and smoke, then pushes that instinct into chypre territory with a lavender-leather-patchouli architecture that refuses to settle on one mood. Marketed as an oriental leather chypre, it was designed to seduce across the gender spectrum, pulling from both the aromatic herbal tradition and a smoky resinous base. The composition treats raw materials as the point rather than the backdrop, letting each note carry real weight in the blend.
What makes Confusion structurally interesting is the doubled lavender. It appears in both the top and heart, functioning as a structural spine rather than a decorative note. Top-layer lavender reads bright and herbal alongside bergamot and sage. Heart-layer lavender shifts darker, mingling with patchouli's earthiness and cedar's grain to create a fougère-adjacent effect.
