The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nathalie Feisthauer designed Pour Lui in Black as a nocturnal counterpoint to its predecessor. Where the original Pour Lui read as daytime, this edition was built for the hours after, when formality drops and presence matters more. The brief was clear: sensual, powerful, playing on codes of virility and seduction. Mauboussin, a house known for jewellery precision applied to scent, gave Feisthauer room to push into oriental-woody territory. The result is a fragrance that doesn't announce itself so much as settle into a room.
What makes this composition interesting is the salted caramel. Not a common opening note, it skews gourmand, almost edible, which could tip into cloying territory. But Feisthauer paired it with mint, which keeps the sweetness honest. The black violet in the heart adds a powdery floral dimension that contrasts the gourmand opening, while the cedar and sage ground it in something more traditionally masculine. The base, benzoin, guaiac wood, Indonesian patchouli, is where the oriental-woody identity solidifies. Resinous, warm, with patchouli's earthy depth.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and unexpected. Salted caramel and mint arrive together, sweet, cool, a little playful. The mint fades first, leaving the caramel to meld with Italian mandarin. About thirty minutes in, the black violet emerges. Powdery, slightly floral, it softens the gourmand edge without replacing it. The cedar and sage arrive quietly, adding structure. Then the drydown: benzoin and patchouli. The caramel doesn't disappear entirely, it lingers underneath, warm and resinous. On most skin, this lasts through the evening. The sillage stays moderate, present but not shouting.
Cultural impact
Pour Lui in Black occupies a specific space: sweet-gourmand enough to be noticed, oriental-woody enough to be taken seriously. For men who want something with presence but without the aggressive fresh-aquatic territory, this is an option. The moderate sillage makes it wearable in professional settings while the sweetness keeps it memorable.
