The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mauboussin, founded on Rue Greneta in 1827, approached Star from the jewelry bench rather than the perfume laboratory. Karine Dubreuil-Sereni, drawing on considerable experience in French fragrance, was tasked with creating something genuinely celestial. Her brief centered on capturing light in olfactory form, echoing the house's tradition of transforming precious materials into wearable art. The choice of notes reflects this aspiration: fig and pineapple evoke the clarity of starlight while iris brings the powdered elegance associated with fine jewels. Dubreuil-Sereni's execution suggests a perfumer who understands that celestial does not mean delicate or fragile.
The note selection in Star reveals a deliberate strategy: pairing bright tropical opener with powdered elegance and warm comfort base creates a fragrance that reads as both luminous and grounded. Pineapple and fig open with genuine radiance while iris and coconut milk introduce sophistication that most fruity florals skip entirely. The drydown leans into praline, tonka bean, and vanilla precisely because these materials have the longevity to extend the fragrance experience without requiring heavy application. Cedarwood and white amber work in concert to provide structure and radiance respectively, ensuring the drydown maintains interest rather than simply lingering.
The evolution
Star begins as a bright declaration, fig and pineapple presenting themselves with confident cheer. This tropical opening feels like the moment a star becomes visible at dusk, clear and unapologetic. The heart phase arrives within fifteen minutes, iris introducing its powdery sophistication alongside coconut milk's creamy presence. This middle third transforms what could have been a straightforward fruity fragrance into something with depth and structure. The drydown transitions slowly, vanilla and tonka bean taking approximately three hours to fully assert themselves. Praline adds confection-like sweetness while cedarwood and white amber work to prevent the base from becoming saccharine. Heliotrope softens the final impression, leaving a tender, lingering trace that read as intimate rather than obvious.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Star has been praised for its confident gourmand profile that bridges sweet and fresh. Wearers often note the harmonious blend of tropical fruit with a creamy vanilla‑tonka base, comparing it to other luxury gourmand offerings while appreciating its distinct bright opening. Its refined bottle design and balanced sillage have made it a subtle favorite among collectors seeking a scent that feels both elegant and approachable.
