The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Upbeat for Him arrived in 2016 as part of Mary Kay's men's fragrance rotation, with the official composition credited differently depending on which directory you consult. Parfumo lists the perfumer as Natasha Côté-Mouzannar, while Fragrantica credits Irina Burlakova, and both attribute the formula to Givaudan rather than an in-house team. Mary Kay built its scent portfolio through long-standing relationships with established houses, tapping into specialist perfumery expertise to shape compositions for its consultant-driven audience. The result channels a familiar masculine vocabulary, citrus over spice over an earthy base, and arranges it into a tight, optimistic composition.
What makes the structure worth a second look is the balance between brightness and backbone. Bergamot, lemongrass, and mandarin orange set the opening in a high register, clean and immediately present. The citrus trio opens with that almost-effervescent lift, bergamot bringing a slightly bitter edge, mandarin keeping things rounded and sweet, and lemongrass threading through with a green, grassy cut. Once that initial brightness begins to soften, the heart takes shape.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all forward motion. Bergamot and mandarin hit with a bright, almost effervescent clarity while lemongrass adds a green, grassy edge underneath. It smells like stepping outside on a cool morning, the air still holding the night. The citrus opening has that particular quality of being sharp without aggression, present without shouting, the kind of clarity that catches attention across a room without feeling like it's trying. By the 30-minute mark, the citrus has stepped back and the middle settles in. The heart unfolds with an aromatic, slightly herbal character: sage contributes a dry, almost camphoraceous lift, geranium, where the sources agree it's present, brings a soapy, slightly floral edge, and black pepper throws a warm, clean heat that cuts through everything else. This is the phase that defines the fragrance.
Cultural impact
Upbeat for Him sits comfortably in the accessible masculine fragrance category, the kind of composition designed to be worn without thinking rather than dissected. The accord profile, bright citrus over aromatic spice over a warm, earthy base, places it within a recognizable family of everyday masculine releases, and the execution leans into familiar vocabulary without straying far from convention. Within that familiar territory, however, the composition holds enough character to avoid feeling generic.
