The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Natasha Côté designed Clever in 2015 with one idea in mind: an approachable floral-fruity-gourmand that didn't require explanation. The brief was simple, something a woman could wear to the grocery store or a dinner party without thinking twice. No dramatic opening, no obscure materials. Just a composition that felt immediately comfortable, like a conversation you've had before. The almond blossom gave it a softness that set it apart from the standard fruity floral. The marshmallow in the base gave it warmth. That was the thesis. Accessible, yes, but never boring.
What makes Clever unusual within the fruity-floral genre is how the almond and marshmallow work together. Almond blossom at the top adds a faint nuttiness that stops the fruit from reading too sweet. Marshmallow at the base does the opposite, it rounds the woody notes into something soft and edible rather than sharp or green. The result is a fragrance that stays in a narrow, comfortable lane: sweet enough to be pleasant, floral enough to be feminine, with just enough gourmand warmth to feel distinct. Pink peony and freesia in the heart keep it from leaning too far in any direction. It's a careful balance. Not revolutionary, but genuinely well-executed within its parameters.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, almond blossom and sun-ripened fruit arriving together, sweet and immediate. Peony and freesia take over soon after, turning the composition soft and powdery. Chamomile adds a quiet herbal edge that keeps the floral heart from feeling overly sweet. The interplay between these notes creates a dynamic bouquet that shifts and breathes on first application. The drydown is where Clever earns its name. The marshmallow and musk settle close to the skin, turning the woody notes into something warm and intimate. There's a comforting quality to how the fragrance develops, moving from that initial fruity brightness into a softer, more personal territory. The sillage remains modest throughout, creating an aura that invites rather than announces. On fabric the scent leaves a gentle trace that lingers pleasantly through daily activities.
Cultural impact
Clever by Mary Kay launched in 2015, introducing a floral-fruity-gourmand profile that blends multiple fragrance traditions into a cohesive whole. The composition brings together bright, summery fruit notes with traditional floral heart notes, while the gourmand elements add a contemporary twist that gives the scent its distinctive character. This layering creates something that feels both familiar and fresh, appealing to those who appreciate complexity without intensity. The fragrance occupies a particular space in the market, accessible enough for everyday wear yet sophisticated enough to hold attention.
