The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Odun was created by Andrea Marcoccia and launched in 2023. Its composition is built around a deliberate contrast, pairing a bright opening with a darker, more substantial structure. Neroli and coca leaf introduce the fragrance at the top, bringing a clean floral lift and a green, mineral edge. The composition then moves through guaiac wood, cypriol oil, and sandalwood before settling into amber, ebony, frankincense, and animalic musk. Sandalwood also appears later in the documented structure, giving the progression a recurring woody accent as the final notes unfold.
The unusual part is the handoff between brightness and weight. Neroli gives the opening a clean floral lift, while coca leaf brings a contrasting green, mineral edge into the first impression. The fragrance then moves toward patchouli, guaiac wood, and cypriol oil, creating a transition from freshness to a more grounded woody character. Sandalwood appears twice in the documented structure, linking the heart with the later phase and helping the composition maintain continuity as it evolves.
The evolution
At first, the fragrance is shaped by the contrast between neroli and coca leaf. Neroli supplies a clean floral lift, while coca leaf contributes a green, mineral edge. As the opening gives way to the heart, guaiac wood and cypriol oil introduce a more grounded woody character, and sandalwood keeps the composition in dialogue with its brighter beginning. The later stages bring amber, ebony, and frankincense into focus, adding warm, deep, and resinous facets to the drydown. Animalic musk continues that textural direction with a soft, intimate effect. Odun develops gradually, moving from a lifted floral beginning into a darker woody base marked by amber, ebony, frankincense, and musk.
Cultural impact
Marcoccia's place in independent Italian perfumery gives Odun a context rooted in atmosphere, texture, and close sensory experience. Its composition brings together neroli, coca leaf, guaiac wood, cypriol oil, sandalwood, amber, ebony, frankincense, and animalic musk in a progression that moves from brightness to depth. Rather than relying on a single dominant impression, the fragrance develops through contrasts: floral and mineral at the opening, woody notes through the center, and warm, resinous, and musky facets in the base.
The House
MarcocciaMarcoccia is an Italian niche fragrance house founded in 2006 by perfumer Andrea Marcoccia. The house occupies a distinctive space within Italian perfumery, creating scents that translate personal memories and Mediterranean landscapes into wearable compositions. Marcoccia's collection spans multiple olfactory territories, from the warm embrace of vanillas and patchoulis to the bright citrus groves of Sicily. The brand operates as an independent house, with Andrea Marcoccia serving as both founder and perfumer, a structure that allows complete creative control over every composition. The house publishes fragrances at a deliberate pace rather than seasonal releases, with notable works including Mandorla di Sicilia from 2009, Vaniglia & Patchouli and Vaniglia Intensa both from 2020, and several 2023 releases including Ombre Nomade, Discover, Panta Rei, and Moonshine. Each fragrance draws from Italian cultural touchstones, often referencing specific regions, memories, or family connections, positioning Marcoccia as a deeply personal project within the niche fragrance landscape.
