The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Godspeed emerged from Volume III of the Act of Faith trilogy, a collection five years in the making. Perfumer Cristiano Canali and Kristian Malbrum began development in 2018, working toward something that could embody determination and self-belief, scents with the confidence to face resistance head-on. Godspeed became the trilogy's grounding force: earthy, natural, anchored in raw material rather than abstraction. The name carries its intent plainly. Not a whisper. A send-off.
The pepper blend here is unusually composed, three distinct sources working in concert. Timur, the Nepalese berry pepper, brings citrusy heat that lifts rather than burns. Black pepper grounds it. Pink pepper CO2 smooths the edges. Together they create an opening that announces itself clearly, then yields to smoke without ceremony. Turkish rose absolute doesn't arrive as a floral note in any conventional sense, it threads through the incense, warming the smoke, keeping it from going austere. That's the deliberate choice: smoke without coldness.
The evolution
Pepper and incense arrive together, Timur's electric heat meeting smoke that's been burning since the first spray. The black pepper crackles, then softens. Turkish rose absolute threads through, unexpected and disarming. Church smoke, but warmer. Less doctrine, more devotion. The drydown settles into frankincense and amber, the rose retreating into the background. What remains is smoke and warmth that holds close for hours. Cedarwood, musk, and cashmeran create a skin-like finish. Oakmoss adds vintage complexity, this isn't a modern soft-woods fragrance. It has weight. By the end of a full wear, Ambrocenide and Ambroxan leave a clean, mineral precision that lingers long past the occasion itself. The interplay between these ingredients creates a drydown that feels both ancient and precisely measured, a finish that rewards patience and close attention.
Cultural impact
The Act of Faith trilogy, of which Godspeed forms the third chapter, represents a focused artistic statement within the perfume world. Godspeed's pepper-incense-rose structure offers a counterpoint to increasingly safe fragrance compositions, embracing intensity and complexity over universal appeal. The fragrance builds on the sensory language established in its predecessors while striking out into distinctly bold territory. Its smoke-forward character and unexpected rose presence create something that asks for engagement rather than simply filling a room.
