The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fresh As emerged from Lush's in-house perfumery in 2019, created by Emma Vincent (née Dick). The name comes from urban slang meaning "looking straight up fly", and the fragrance was originally pitched as "Fresh as Fuck" before landing on the version that made it to market. Vincent built the composition around a single mandate: real pine, not pine-flavored. Fir needle absolute and tagetes oil carry the brief into something that actually smells like walking through a forest, not spraying something that wants to.
What makes Fresh As work is the tension between the sharp, almost medicinal cleanliness of the fir and the earthy, slightly sweet undercurrent of benzoin resinoid. Tagetes, marigold, adds an herbal dimension that most pine fragrances skip entirely. It smells green in the way that a forest is green: complex, layered, and slightly dangerous. The orris root in the base doesn't dominate, but it gives the drydown a powdery floral whisper that keeps the woods from feeling flat. This isn't pine as backdrop. It's pine as presence.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately: bright, sharp, almost acidic in its freshness. That first minute is pure fir needle, the kind that releases when you crush actual pine needles between your fingers. Tagetes arrives next, softening the initial sharpness and adding an herbal, almost citrus-like lift that introduces a layer of complexity. As the fragrance evolves, the heart settles into a quieter pine, with benzoin's sweetness beginning to emerge around the edges, creating a subtle warmth that contrasts with the opening. The drydown brings a warm, balsamic blend of benzoin and orris that feels nothing like the opening, shifting the experience into something softer and more intimate. What lingers is faint pine and resin, close and personal on skin.
Cultural impact
Fresh As brings something distinctive to the green fragrance space: real pine, not a synthetic interpretation of pine. It's vegan and crafted by Lush, which means it carries certain expectations around natural materials and ethical formulation. The unisex positioning and moderate sillage make it approachable for daily wear, suitable for those who appreciate a fragrance that stays true to its botanical inspiration without becoming a parody of itself.
