The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Midnight Flacon represents a new chapter in Lolita Lempicka's ongoing fairy tale. Introduced in 2023 as a limited-edition interpretation of the house's signature Le Parfum, this edition reimagines the iconic apple-shaped bottle in midnight blue glass adorned with golden accents, a collector's vessel for a fragrance that has defied convention since its debut. The house, founded by designer Josiane Pividal in Paris, built its perfumery identity on gourmand contrasts: sweet and aromatic, whimsical and sensual. The Midnight edition doesn't rewrite that story. It decorates it.
What sets Le Parfum apart, and by extension, this Midnight edition, is the audacity of its licorice-anise pairing. Anise is rarely the protagonist. Here, it opens the composition with a black, slightly medicinal intensity that most fragrances bury in the drydown. The licorice doesn't hide from it. The two notes negotiate in real time, with the heart's iris and tonka bean serving as mediators, powdery, warm, and sweet enough to soften the edge without dissolving it. The result is a fragrance that rewards patience. It doesn't perform for you immediately. It waits until you're ready to let it stay.
The evolution
The opening lasts longer than expected. That anise doesn't just flash and disappear, it holds for fifteen to twenty minutes, herbing the air around you with something between absinthe and a pharmacy's back shelf. Then the licorice arrives, thick and almost tar-black, taking over the conversation. The ivy adds a green undertone that keeps both from cloying. By the second hour, the iris and tonka bean have built their empire: powdery, warm, and close to the skin. Musk and vanilla anchor everything that follows, holding the drydown for four to six hours depending on your skin. On fabric, it lasts longer, lingering into the next day if you're lucky enough to catch it.
Cultural impact
Le Parfum has been a signature for Lolita Lempicka since its original 1997 launch, created by Annick Menardo with its unusual anise-licorice-violet-vanilla combination. The Midnight Flacon edition, launched in 2023, brings this house signature into a collector's vessel, midnight blue glass with golden accents, that speaks to the fragrance's dual nature: whimsical and sensual, sweet and sharp. The 2023 edition is 100% vegan, carrying the One Voice label. Wearers consistently describe it as instantly recognizable, a fragrance that announces itself without filling the room.
