The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kn°18 arrives as part of Korloff's K88 collection, a numbered series that extends the maison's fragrance catalog with carefully structured compositions. The K88 line is built around numbered releases, each one titled with a temperature reading, giving the collection a sense of precision and intentionality from the start. Kn°18 is the woody-aromatic entry in the series: cool citrus and green herbs at the face, iris at the heart, then tobacco and cashmere wood closing the setting. The composition reads as a study in contrasts, with fresh top notes giving way to a quieter, drier warmth in the base. Grapefruit, basil, and freesia form a bright opening that suggests something herbal and slightly bitter, clean enough to feel airy but grounded enough to register on skin.
What makes Kn°18 interesting isn't any single note, it's the tension between the top trio and the base. Grapefruit, basil, and freesia read almost weightless at first, a bright, slightly bitter green opening that suggests a summer afternoon. Then aniseed, black pepper, and iris pull the temperature down and pull it inward. Aniseed and black pepper together create a cool, spicy edge that contrasts sharply with the eventual tobacco. That transition from aromatic-cool to warm-dry is where the fragrance earns its place, it's not a smooth gradient but a clear shift in register.
The evolution
On skin, Kn°18 opens with a burst of grapefruit that reads sharp and almost mineral, then the basil and freesia soften the edges into something herbaceous and clean. The opening phase is all top register, green, bright, a little peppery, the kind of fresh introduction that makes an immediate impression. Then the iris enters, deepened by aniseed and a flicker of black pepper. This is the phase that defines Kn°18. The heart is where the composition stops being a citrus fragrance and starts being something more complex, with the iris acting as a quiet bridge between the bright opening and the warmer base. The aniseed gives this middle stage a cool, licorice-like quality that sits comfortably alongside the iris without dominating it, while the black pepper keeps everything slightly alert.
Cultural impact
Kn°18 lands within Korloff's K88 numbered series, a collection built around clarity, structure, and a sense of restraint. Each numbered release in the series takes a focused approach to composition, with few notes, clear architecture, and nothing added that doesn't earn its place. Kn°18 follows this template closely, opening with grapefruit, basil, and freesia, moving through an iris heart sharpened by aniseed and black pepper, and settling into a base of tobacco, cashmere wood, vetiver, and musk.
