Why it exists.
The beginning
In March 2009, Kenzo boutiques received something unusual: a fragrance with no name. Just a numbered bottle and an architect's peculiar object designed by Ron Arad, a sculptural flask that curves to fit the hand, its shape meant to suggest infinity. Only 2,300 copies existed. The brief to perfumer Aurélien Guichard was equally strange: make something worth wearing but don't give it a label. Let people figure it out themselves. So Guichard built around three materials, frankincense, African orange flower, rose, and let the composition speak without introduction. He found inspiration in marble dust, in the mineral quiet of stone. The result smelled like something that had been around longer than its bottle.
The note structure is unusual because the pyramid barely exists. Where most fragrances build top-to-bottom, UFO starts warm and stays warm, vanilla-adjacent florals arriving simultaneously with the incense rather than preceding it. The three materials (frankincense, African orange flower, rose) never fully separate. They coexist from the first spray, creating a dialogue instead of a progression. This is what makes it strange and compelling: the expected architecture is missing. You get all three voices at once, and they argue gently about which should dominate. The perfumer's decision to pull leather aromas through olibanum gives the frankincense a dusty, mineral quality, less church, more ancient stone.
The evolution
The opening hits warm. Vanilla-adjacent, white florals in no particular order, and then, almost immediately, the frankincense arrives. There's no waiting for the drydown. It starts the conversation. The orange blossom keeps things clean, soapy, almost soapy in the best way, while the rose hums underneath. Then comes the long middle: the incense doing its dusty mineral thing, that marble dust quality the perfumer mentioned, staying close and resinous. The drydown is frankincense and memory. On skin, expect 4-6 hours of presence. On fabric, longer, the rose and incense merge into something quieter, intimate, still present the next morning.
Cultural impact
The 2009 launch was a deliberate provocation. A fashion house releasing a fragrance with no name, numbered bottles, limited to 2,300 pieces, sold only in its own boutiques, that's not product strategy. That's a conversation. Wearers who found it described something unusual: a fragrance that refuses to behave like one. The unconventional pyramid (warm florals and incense arriving together rather than sequentially) created discussion among those who paid attention. A decade later, the scarcity and strangeness have only deepened its appeal. It's the fragrance people describe when they want to prove they know something others don't.
