The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vetiver Cuir arrived in 2022 from Jul et Mad's Les Essentiels collection, composed by Luca Maffei. The vetiver here is unapologetically present, earthy and slightly medicinal, with a rooty intensity that speaks directly from the bottle. Maffei positions this ingredient as the subject rather than a supporting element, building a structure where it holds everything together like a thread running through the composition. The opening offers cool, green facets before transitioning into a warm drydown where leather and vetiver coexist in harmony. There's a mineral quality to the vetiver that grounds the fragrance, while the overall effect feels both contemporary and timeless, with the vetiver providing continuity from first spray through the final moments on skin.
The unusual move here is letting vetiver lead rather than support. The vetiver is the protagonist, earthy and slightly medicinal, while leather and warm woods orbit around it. These surrounding notes create a rich, textured backdrop without ever overwhelming the central green-earth accord. The tonka-bean softness in the heart prevents the leather from reading harsh, adding a subtle sweetness that balances the composition.
The evolution
The opening is citrus and vetiver together, bergamot bright against the root's earthiness. Grapefruit adds a tart edge that doesn't linger. Within the first hour, the leather arrives and the composition shifts. It's warm leather, not sharp, and it builds alongside patchouli and ambroxan. The heart holds for several hours, tonka and labdanum softening what could be harsh. The drydown is where vetiver wins, mineral, smoky, long-lasting. Cashmeran wraps it soft. Guaiac and cedar add depth. By the end, it's intimate, close, the kind of scent you find on your skin the next morning.
Cultural impact
Vetiver Cuir has found its audience among those who appreciate authentic vetiver, the rooty, earthy material that smells like the plant actually growing rather than a synthetic approximation. The fragrance appeals to wearers seeking a vetiver-forward composition that doesn't compromise on depth or complexity. Its longevity allows the scent to develop and reveal new dimensions over hours of wear, while the warm leather character provides comfort and richness without veering into harsh territory.
