The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mon Seul Désir launched in 2017 under the creative direction of Stéphanie Bakouche at Jul et Mad Paris, a house founded in 2012 with a penchant for storytelling through scent. The creation draws inspiration from the medieval La Dame à la Licorne blend, imagining a single hidden desire captured within jeweled panels. Bakouche translated this concept through a deliberate structure: bright opening notes of nutmeg, pink pepper, and mandarin orange, an Intimate heart of coriander, osmanthus, and oud, and a warm base of leather, amber, benzoin, guaiac wood, and musk. The composition aims to reveal desire layer by layer, each stage offering something new to discover.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast and balance. Spices like nutmeg and pink pepper provide initial energy, but the osmanthus in the heart introduces unexpected gentleness. Oud brings depth, yet coriander and florals prevent it from dominating. The drydown focuses on warmth and comfort rather than spectacle, with leather, amber, and benzoin creating a cocoon-like finish. This structure mirrors the fragrance's inspiration: desire that reveals itself gradually, each layer offering a different perspective on the same core longing.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with immediate brightness courtesy of mandarin orange, quickly joined by the warmth of nutmeg and the delicate prickliness of pink pepper. Within the first hour, coriander enters softly, shifting the energy from fruity-spicy to aromatic. Osmanthus blooms as the heart matures, introducing apricot-floral sweetness that tempers the emerging oud. The oud provides depth and darkness without aggression, working in harmony with the softer notes surrounding it. As hours pass, leather emerges in the drydown, followed by amber and benzoin creating warm, resinous comfort. Guaiac wood adds a smoky dimension while musk ensures the final stage feels Intimate and skin-like. This arc moves from vibrant clarity to shadowy complexity to warm embrace.
Cultural impact
Since its 2017 debut, Mon Seul Désir has been noted for its bold leather‑spice character, earning a place alongside niche staples like Crème de Cuir and African Leather. Wearers often cite its confident sillage as a signature for evening outings, while its animalic oud draws admiration from collectors seeking depth. The fragrance has sparked online discussions about the balance of citrus brightness with dark leather, cementing its reputation as a modern classic in the unisex leather niche.
