Why it exists.
The beginning
Cédrat Gingembre joined Jul et Mad's Les Essentiels collection in 2022, and it lands in a part of the lineup that treats citrus as a serious compositional move rather than a top-note cameo. The fragrance was composed around the essential oil of citron, Citrus medica, the old-world variety with the thick rind and the bitter, almost floral peel. Luca Maffei built the structure with citron in a starring role, and the oil's density gives the composition a backbone that lighter citrus materials rarely provide. Bergamot lifts the opening and ginger adds a clean warmth through the middle, but the citron remains the thread you can trace from the first spray to the last hour of wear.
Citron carries a different weight than the citrus materials most people are used to, with a thick-peel bitterness and a slower release that asks to be paired carefully. Pairing it with ginger brings a clean warmth and enough body to keep the citron from disappearing into the opening minutes. The sea salt in the heart adds a mineral quality that reads more as clean air than as ocean, holding the composition together while the citrus does its bright thing. White amber enters quietly underneath, doing the bridging work between the salty middle and the cedrat-tinged wood at the base.
The evolution
The opening is sharp bergamot and citron with ginger slicing through, cold and clean. Bergamot and citron carry the first phase together, with ginger threading underneath as a warm counterweight to the cold citrus above. As the composition moves forward, juniper berries arrive and the whole thing tilts drier, more aromatic, less dominated by citrus and more herbal in character. The sea salt adds a mineral edge to the middle phase, sitting against the juniper and the ginger in a way that reads as crisp and atmospheric. White amber threads underneath the salt and juniper, holding the middle together and softening the transitions between the brighter top notes and what comes next. As the hours pass, the woods take over. Cedarwood leads, guaiac wood adds a dark warmth, sandalwood softens the edges, and musk settles everything into skin.

Cédrat Gingembre uses citron and ginger as its central materials, a pairing that places it slightly apart from the more common bergamot-and-amber combinations that dominate the citrus segment of niche perfumery. The fragrance rewards attention to its drydown as much as its opening, with the woods and the ginger carrying the composition into its later hours.
