The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Strictly arrived in October 2015 as the masculine counterpart to Simply Jil Sander from 2014. The naming followed the house's own collection calendar, Strictly as a statement of intent, not just a label. Jil Sander had spent decades building a vocabulary of restraint, and this fragrance took that code and applied it directly to male elegance: a woody-spicy composition that reads like a well-cut suit, clear lines, fine material, nothing wasted. Perfumer Sonia Constant worked within those constraints to build something that felt confident without announcing itself.
The structure here is unusually disciplined for a spicy-woody. Bay rum opens bright and aromatic, it's a material that can easily overwhelm, but the white pepper keeps it honest, adds a cool edge that prevents the whole thing from going heavy too early. The heart of cardamom and nutmeg warms without sweetening. The base is where Strictly earns its name: vetiver and cedar give it longevity and earthiness, but the tonka bean adds just enough warmth to keep it wearable rather than austere. The composition doesn't try to do too much. That's the point.
The evolution
Bay rum hits first, clean, aromatic, immediately present. White pepper joins within minutes, cutting across the sweetness with a sharpness that reframes everything. The heart takes its time arriving. When it does, cardamom and nutmeg don't compete with the opening; they extend it, warming the whole structure without softening it. Vetiver and cedar arrive around the two-hour mark and stay. Strictly holds for six to eight hours on most skin, the drydown getting quieter rather than fading, a scent that's still identifiable on skin the next morning.
Cultural impact
Strictly occupies a particular space: masculine without being loud, spicy without being aggressive. It's the kind of fragrance that reads as considered rather than performative. The house has always attracted wearers who understand that luxury subtracts rather than accumulates, and Strictly continues that logic in a woody-spicy register. It doesn't try to compete with louder masculines in the same price range, it simply does its job quietly and well.
