The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sophie Labbé designed this fragrance for Jil Sander. The Simply collection embraces warmth and texture, creating a different direction from the brand's more classic signatures. Labbé created a fragrance that whispers and lingers, with soft powdery notes that unfold gently on the skin. The composition balances delicate florals with deeper, warmer elements, giving the scent a quiet yet substantial presence. There's a confident quality to how the fragrance develops, revealing its character slowly rather than announcing itself all at once. The overall effect is one of intimate elegance, where each layer feels considered and deliberate.
What makes this composition stand out is the heliotrope-chocolate pairing in the heart. Heliotrope brings the almond-like powderiness that gives the fragrance its name and its character, a soft floral quality that feels like crushed petals and creamy vanilla undertones. Cocoa absolute adds depth without sweetness, bringing a rich, slightly bitter note that grounds the lighter heliotrope. Together they create a heart that feels both airy and substantial, the powdery softness of heliotrope finding counterweight in the dark warmth of cocoa.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly: mandarin and freesia together, citrus-bright and fleeting. The mandarin adds a sparkling quality while the freesia contributes a light, slightly sweet floral note that softens the citrus edge. Within minutes the heliotrope takes over, carrying the fragrance into its longest phase, powdery, almond-soft, gently floral. The transition feels natural as the bright opening notes recede and the softer heart emerges. The base is where this fragrance earns its name. Cashmeran wraps the drydown in soft warmth while sandalwood adds creaminess, creating a smooth, enveloping quality. Then the vetiver arrives, late but unmistakable, a dry, slightly smoky note that adds complexity and prevents the composition from feeling too soft. The final hours on skin smell like clean skin and warm fabric, intimate and close.
Cultural impact
Simply Jil Sander Poudrée Intense arrived in 2019 as part of a collection that explored warmer, more textured directions for the brand. The launch offered a different approach from the house's more traditional signatures, fusing clean lines with softer, more enveloping materials. In a market where bold orientals and statement ouds often dominate, this powdery-gourmand approach offered a quieter alternative. The release centered heliotrope and cocoa absolute rather than loud florals or heavy woods, creating a fragrance that prioritizes subtlety over projection.
