The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bernard Ellena created Style by Jil Sander in 2006. The brief was to craft a fragrance that honored the house's core aesthetic. The philosophy runs through the entire Jil Sander house. Style needed to embody that same principle, capturing the brand's commitment to deliberate composition. Ellena approached the project with an understanding of what makes the house distinctive: a preference for clarity over complexity, for suggestion over statement. The resulting fragrance reflects this sensibility, built around notes that work together with purpose rather than compete for attention. Opening with crisp pink pepper and cardamom, the scent moves quickly into a freesia-driven heart before settling into a warm vanilla and musk drydown.
The surprise in Style is its warmth. Here the mango introduces something unexpectedly tender. The freesia keeps the composition grounded in something clean and recognizable, while the iris and jasmine heart shows a sophisticated approach to powdery florals. Vanilla and musk arrive to close the composition in warmth, leaving something that lingers close to the skin rather than announcing itself across a room. The result is a fragrance that feels approachable without sacrificing the refinement expected from the house.
The evolution
Pink pepper and cardamom arrive first, crisp and precise. Freesia follows, soft and green. Mango appears briefly, a tropical sweetness that hints at the warmth building beneath. This opening lasts about 15 minutes before the heart takes over. Iris steps in, powdered, slightly root-like, undeniable. Violet, magnolia, and jasmine round out the floral heart, creating a refined but substantial presence that dominates for 2 to 4 hours. The drydown belongs to vanilla and musk. Warm without being sweet. The musk keeps things clean and intimate; the vanilla adds depth without heaviness. The sillage remains moderate, meaning Style stays close. Not a room-filler. A companion. Something you notice when you lift your wrist. The warm vanilla and clean musk create an intimate closing that feels both comforting and refined.
Cultural impact
Style arrived in 2006, introducing a powdery-floral-musk profile to the Jil Sander fragrance collection. The composition centers on clean, soft florals anchored by warm undertones, creating a distinctive character within the genre. Iris and jasmine form the heart, supported by freesia and magnolia, while vanilla and musk provide a warm, intimate drydown. The result is a fragrance that balances sophistication with accessibility, offering a refined option for those who appreciate nuanced perfumery.
