The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ambre Baroque is a 2024 composition from Harb's, a house built around one idea: scent as a bridge between memory and place. The brand's identity centers on a perfumery practice that takes the amber tradition as its starting point, then treats that starting point as a question worth reopening. Ambre Baroque sits firmly in the amber tradition, but the architecture of the composition leans into layered fruit and wood rather than the expected weight of spice and resin. It's baroque in the decorative sense, layered, abundant, built to be noticed without losing elegance. The composition moves from juicy to woody to warm in a single arc, holding sweetness at the center without tipping into gourmand territory.
What's interesting here is the structural decision to lead with fruit. Ambre Baroque opens with blackcurrant, plum, orange, and bergamot, which gives the first few minutes a juicy, slightly tart lift before the heart takes over. The blackcurrant brings a green, almost catty edge that keeps the fruit from reading as purely sweet; the plum rounds it out with a soft, slightly syrupy depth; the orange and bergamot add a citrus shimmer that makes the whole accord feel alive rather than static.
The evolution
Ambre Baroque opens with a declaration of fruit, led by blackcurrant and bergamot, that feels almost like a prelude in an old sonata. The citrus and plum lift quickly, giving way to a heart where vetiver, cedar, and rose hold the composition upright while jasmine and patchouli add weight. As hours pass, the fruit recedes and the amber-vanilla-musk base rises to the surface, turning the bright opening into something warmer and more private. What began as a baroque flourish ends in a quiet chord, close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Ambre Baroque offers a different texture within the amber category by foregrounding fruit before it ever reaches resin. The blackcurrant, plum, orange, and bergamot at the top give the opening a brightness that many amber compositions skip over entirely, and that brightness changes how the fragrance reads in a room. Rather than announcing itself with dense spice or smoky resin, it arrives with a juicy, slightly tart lift that softens into the warmth of rose, jasmine, and the woody amber base.
