The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Because I'm Free emerged from a simple question: what does liberation smell like when you actually live it? Luca Gritti built this 2023 composition as an answer to the pressures of performing, the expectation to be fresh, safe, inoffensive. Instead, it opens with candied fruits and petitgrain, a playful tension between sweetness and green brightness. But there's no restraint here. The heart blooms into full-throttle white florals, the florals that don't whisper, that fill the room and don't care who noticed first. It's named for those who wear it.
The real intrigue here is the banana flower. Rare in perfumery, it adds an unexpected tropical creaminess to what could otherwise be a straightforward tuberose-heavy white floral. Combined with candied fruits in the opening and caramel in the base, the result is a sweet-fruity-gourmand that reads as both nostalgic and surprising. The almond blossom in the top gives it a soft, edible quality from the first spray, like marzipan before the florals take over. This is not a fragrance for people who want to blend in.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Petitgrain's green-citrus edge cuts through the candied fruit sweetness, a brief moment of structure before the florals arrive. Within minutes, the almond blossom softens everything, and the heart begins its slow takeover. The tuberose doesn't tiptoe in. It arrives bold, creamy, jasmine-warm. Here's where the banana flower earns its place, it adds a tropical richness that makes this floral heart feel more complex than the typical white floral. Less laundry, more jungle at dusk. By hour three, the sillage settles from room-filling to close. The amber and vanilla anchor the florals as they slowly exhale. The caramel stays, a sweet whisper on the wrist that lingers past midnight. Apply it in the afternoon, wake up to vanilla and warm skin. Apply it at night, become the person everyone's trying to place long after you've left the room.
Cultural impact
Released in 2023 into a market saturated with fresh, clean fragrances, Because I'm Free went the other direction, sweet, bold, unapologetically floral. Wearers describe it as the fragrance for someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves. The banana flower note has become its signature talking point, setting it apart from more conventional tuberose-heavy florals in the same price range. It's found its audience among those who want sweetness with complexity.
