The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cabotine Aquarelle by Grès takes its name from the French word for watercolor, that technique where pigment bleeds into wet paper, translucent and weightless. The house of Grès brought that idea directly into a fragrance. Where the original Cabotine was bold and structured, Aquarelle softens the line. Bright, breezy, built for someone who doesn't need a scent to announce her.
The note structure is refreshingly straightforward, no dense heart, no heavy base. Grapefruit and rhubarb lead the top, their tartness feeling almost effervescent. Pineapple adds a tropical sweetness without pushing into candy. The heart leans on white florals, lotus, lily, jasmine sambac, that feel clean rather than indolic. Ylang-ylang brings a whisper of tropical warmth. The base keeps things modern: marine notes, cedar, amber, white musk. It's a fragrance that knows what it is and doesn't apologize for it.
The evolution
The first hour is tart and sparkling. Grapefruit arrives bright, rhubarb adds a green bite, pineapple sweetens the deal. Peach blossom floats underneath, keeping everything delicate. Around the two-hour mark, the heart takes over. Lotus and lily come forward, the water-lily note translating into something clean and cool. Jasmine sambac brings warmth beneath. Ylang-ylang adds a tropical creaminess that prevents it from feeling flat. By the fifth hour, you're in the drydown. The aquatic notes have softened to almost nothing, a skin-close whisper. Cedar keeps things grounded. Amber and white musk finish clean, almost powdery. Moderate sillage throughout. Never fills a room. You notice it more after the wearer has left.
Cultural impact
Released in 2009 alongside Cabotine Sensuelle, Cabotine Aquarelle positioned itself as the fresh, aquatic alternative in the Cabotine lineup, aimed at younger wearers or those wanting a lighter rotation. It hasn't achieved the cultural weight of Cabochard, but among floral-fruity aquatics of its era, it holds its own as a clean, accessible option worth discovering.
