The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson built Gentleman Boisée for the man who wears the classic Gentleman's restraint but wants more. More warmth. More presence. More of the cacao and sandalwood that turn a composed fragrance into something that stays with you. The blend creates a smooth, enveloping character that feels both refined and deeply comforting. Cacao adds a rich, slightly sweet depth while sandalwood provides a creamy, lingering warmth that develops beautifully on the skin. Together, these materials transform a restrained foundation into something that reaches further, leaving a quiet impression that lingers long after you've left the room.
The iris-cacao pairing is the move that sets this apart. The iris brings that powdery cool that makes the cacao feel almost edible. Cedar and sandalwood then carry it into warmth without ever going heavy. It's a careful balance, aromatic enough to open sharp, refined enough to settle into something you can wear all evening. The cedar adds a clean, slightly resinous quality that grounds the sweetness of the cacao, while the sandalwood extends the dry-down into a soft, velvety warmth that feels intimate rather than overpowering.
The evolution
The opening hits with the full force of black pepper and coriander. No easing in. No gentle welcome. Just presence, immediately. Geranium arrives within minutes, cooling the spice just enough to keep it from overwhelming. Then the iris takes over, not dramatically, but inevitably. By the two-hour mark, the composition has shifted entirely, powdery, cool, with that unexpected cacao sweetness humming underneath. The drydown belongs to sandalwood and patchouli. Creamy, warm, intimate. On fabric, this fragrance lingers long after you've left the room. The woody base notes settle into something that smells like skin-warmth and discretion.
Cultural impact
Gentleman Boisee arrives in 2020 as Givenchy's continuation of a masculine fragrance legacy that began with Gentleman in 1974. The original Gentleman line helped define what sophisticated masculine scent meant for decades. Its woody-spicy-powdery character reflects a composition that balances sharp opening notes with a warm, lingering base. The iris and cacao backbone creates a powdery, almost textile-like warmth in the heart of the fragrance, while the black pepper opening adds energy and definition to the top.
