The beginning
Emporio Armani City Glam for Him arrived in 2005, aimed at men moving through the rhythms of contemporary urban life. The brief called for something modern, fresh, and woody, a composition built for glass and pavement rather than countryside ease. Armani turned to two perfumers with serious range, Annick Ménardo and Olivier Cresp. Cresp brought a sculptural instinct to his work, shaping compositions that balance sweetness against edge in unexpected ways. Ménardo contributed her own perspective, known for compositions that play cool mineral tones against warmer foundations, reading almost icy at the opening while settling into something deeper below.
What makes City Glam worth a second look isn't the peppermint or the ginger on their own. It's the way Brazilian peppermint gets layered against Chinese ginger's clean burn, two ingredients that on paper shouldn't work together but somehow build a conversation of opposites. City Glam skips the usual route. Instead of easing from cooling mint into heating spice through some intermediary accord, it drops you straight into the tension, trusting the contrast to carry the composition. The evolution
The first ten minutes are a sprint. Brazilian peppermint arrives cold and almost fizzy, riding over bitter orange's tart peel. It reads sharp, slightly medicinal in the best sense, the olfactory equivalent of stepping out of air conditioning into sun. Within twenty minutes the orange has softened and Chinese ginger takes over, warming the composition from underneath without ever crossing into peppery heat. The grass and herbal notes in the heart are subtler than the top suggests, more suggestion than statement, a green current running under the ginger rather than a lawn in your face. By the two-hour mark, La Réunion vetiver has settled in fully, bringing a dry, rooty, slightly smoky character that feels like it was waiting the whole time.

City Glam for Him holds a specific place in the early-2000s men's fragrance conversation as a green-spicy aromatic, a category that offered something sharper and more deliberate than the dominant aquatic compositions of the preceding years. Among wearers it tends to register as a confident, pulled-together scent, more architectural than the breezy crowd-pleasers that surrounded it at launch.
