The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Giorgio Armani founded his house in Milan in 1975, redefining luxury through restraint rather than excess. His fragrance philosophy mirrors his fashion: effortless authority that enhances presence without announcing it. Acqua di Giò, created with Alberto Morillas, became a landmark precisely because it captured a specific idea of Mediterranean composure. The Profondo Parfum continues that lineage under Morillas' continued stewardship. He has worked with the brand across decades, understanding that each iteration must honor the original while justifying its existence. The 2024 parfum concentration makes no apologies for intensifying what came before.
Morillas has spoken about working within established structures, and the Acqua di Giò lineage represents his longest ongoing dialogue with a single fragrance concept. The Profondo Parfum exists because the original's lightness, while celebrated, left room for those who wanted more substance. Immortelle was likely chosen for its versatility: it bridges floral and resinous categories, allowing the heart to feel coherent whether one experiences it as slightly sweet or distinctly herbal. Labdanum and patchouli in the base anchor the entire structure, ensuring that the marine opening does not remain the dominant memory.
The evolution
The opening delivers the expected marine signature, but the bergamot pairing here is more deliberate than in earlier flankers. Rather than a generic citrus freshness, the bergamot contributes a specific bitterness that frames the aquatic notes with restraint. As the fragrance progresses, immortelle enters with its distinctive resinous-honey character, a note that bridges the gap between the bright opening and the darker base. Lavender and violet leaf complete the heart, adding the herbal-green dimension that prevents the composition from becoming purely sweet. By the time labdanum and patchouli arrive in the drydown, the fragrance has traveled from sea air to dry herbs to warm earth. This arc is intentional and well-executed, each transition feeling earned rather than arbitrary.
Cultural impact
Acqua di Giò Profondo Parfum builds on the legacy of its predecessor. Alberto Morillas continues his work with the house, bringing his expertise to the Parfum concentration. The release represents continuity, a refinement of what came before rather than a departure from it. This is the next step in an established conversation, one that draws on established trust and proven craftsmanship.
