The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Feel Oud, founded in Australia in 2018, built its reputation on radical transparency and sustainability in the agarwood space, offering pure single-note attars that respect both the material and the wearer. Sunrise and Set emerged from the collaboration between house founder Russian Adam and Turkmen perfumer Dmitry Bortnikoff, whose mastery of natural materials guided every step of composition. The brief centered on capturing a specific psychological moment rather than simply assembling pleasant notes. Cardamom and magnolia might seem like unlikely partners, but their tension, the spice against the cream, became the creative engine of the entire piece.
The note philosophy here reflects Feel Oud's broader commitment to letting materials speak rather than manipulating them into submission. Bitter orange and lemon provide the initial clarity, cardamom adds complexity without aggression, and the heart demonstrates how magnolia can anchor rather than overwhelm when vetiver and orris provide structural support. The base grounds everything in woods and earth. Every ingredient has purpose, every transition planned, every phase earned through wear.
The evolution
The opening wears its intentions openly: bitter orange and lemon arrive in unison, their citrus brightness sharpened by cardamom's quiet warmth. This phase passes quickly, as nature demands, but its energy sets the tone for everything that follows. Within minutes, the florals begin their assertion. Magnolia dominates the heart with a presence that is lush without being overwhelming, supported by vetiver's earthy grounding and orris root's subtle powdery elegance. The effect is restrained sophistication, a middle act that rewards continued wear rather than demanding immediate attention. The transition to the drydown marks the true character of Sunrise and Set. Cedarwood arrives with its characteristic dry, slightly pencil-woos resonance while oud deepens the composition with authentic resinous richness. Patchouli completes the base with earthy completion, leaving a presence that lingers without overwhelming. Each phase names its notes clearly; nothing is hidden or muddled.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Sunrise and Set has become a staple among niche enthusiasts who appreciate a bright opening paired with authentic oud. Reviewers note its strong sillage and moderate longevity, positioning it alongside citrus‑woody staples like Amouage Reflection while offering a more approachable spice edge. Its balanced profile has earned it a spot in seasonal wardrobes and frequent mentions in fragrance round‑ups.
