The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cherchez la Femme translates to 'look for the woman', a phrase borrowed from detective fiction and film noir, where the woman is always the explanation, the mystery, the muse. Faberlic built this fragrance around that idea: femininity as the answer, not the question. Released in 2014, the scent was a deliberate statement within the brand's democratic Russian beauty portfolio, proof that accessible pricing could sit alongside a perfumer of real standing. Bertrand Duchaufour, whose work spans major European houses, brought craft to a composition designed for everyday wear. The goal wasn't escape or aspiration. It was presence.
Aldehydes are the structural choice here. They lift citrus into something with presence, give the florals a cool transparency rather than warmth. Without them, this would be another fruity-floral. With them, it reads as intentional, a nod to the fragrances that defined feminine elegance for decades. The heart pairs peony and freesia, two notes that smell like spring without smelling like each other. Cardamom adds warmth underneath, keeping the florals from floating away entirely. The base leans into wood earlier than expected, guaiac wood asserts itself before the florals fully depart, giving the scent its signature mid-arc shift from bright to grounded.
The evolution
The opening is brief and citrus-forward. Bergamot, lemon, mandarin orange arrive together, but the aldehydes immediately soften the edges, that clean soapy quality that makes the citrus read as polished rather than sharp. Currant buds add a green, almost vegetal note that keeps the top from feeling generic. The transition happens around fifteen minutes in. Freesia and peony take over, with orchid and cyclamen providing body underneath. Cardamom whispers from below. Rose adds a traditional femininity here, not heavy, not romantic, just present. This is the heart of the fragrance, where it earns its name. The base arrives earlier than expected. Guaiac wood asserts itself while the florals still linger, creating a moment where bright and warm coexist. Sandalwood adds creaminess. Ambergris gives a soft, salty warmth, animalic but controlled. The drydown stays close, intimate, present for four to six hours depending on skin. This is not a fragrance that fills a room. It's one that rewards proximity.
Cultural impact
Cherchez la Femme occupies a particular space, an aldehydic floral built for everyday wear rather than special occasions. The aldehydes give it a vintage quality that fans of mid-century feminine fragrances will recognize, while the peony and freesia keep it contemporary. Some wearers draw comparisons to Chanel Chance Eau Tendre, which shares a similar citrus-floral structure, though Cherchez la Femme diverges with its woodier drydown. The fragrance's accessible positioning makes it a gateway for wearers new to aldehydic florals, a quiet introduction to a fragrance family that defined elegance for decades.
