The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nuit de Lune opens bright and edible, then descends into something darker, more intimate. Sweet pistachio and green apple interplay against leather, oud, and the quiet animalic heat of castoreum. The perfumer translated that concept into a fragrance where sweetness and darkness coexist, creating tension between light and shadow. The top notes arrive with creamy pistachio, its nutty richness softened by crisp green apple. As the fragrance develops, the fruity sweetness recedes to reveal deeper layers. Leather emerges with its textural warmth, while oud brings smoky, resinous depth. Castoreum adds an animalic quality that feels almost intimate, like a secret shared in low light.
What makes Nuit de Lune unusual is how the top and base notes pull in opposite directions. The opening is almost dessert-like, pistachio cream, green apple, a soft bitter almond, while the drydown is firmly in leather-and-oud territory. That contrast is intentional. The sweetness doesn't disappear as the fragrance evolves. It gets complicated. The saffron in the heart acts as a bridge: warm, resinous, slightly medicinal, it connects the edible brightness of the opening to the dark, animalic base. Cypriol and castoreum bring texture, not just smell, but a sense of density, of something alive. This is a fragrance that rewards wearing it multiple times. Each encounter reveals a different facet.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly. Pistachio cream, green apple, bergamot, bright, sweet, almost playful. The bitter almond keeps it grounded. Then the heart takes over. Saffron leads, bringing its warm, slightly medicinal edge. Carrot seed adds an earthy, root-like depth. Guatemalan cardamom rounds everything into amber-tinged warmth. This is the oriental phase, rich, complex, demanding attention. The drydown is where the fragrance becomes itself. Leather and castoreum anchor the composition. Vietnamese oud brings a smoky, slightly medicinal depth. Ambroxan extends everything, clean and long-lasting. The amber-vanilla-cashmere wood trio wraps around skin like a warm, intimate second skin. Oakmoss and Indonesian patchouli linger in the background. Nuit de Lune rewards patience as the scent unfolds through its phases.
Cultural impact
Nuit de Lune is one of seven fragrances Empreinte d'Effluves released in 2024. The fragrance sits at the bolder end of the house's range, a statement piece for those who want scent to do more than smell pleasant. With its strong leather and animalic backbone, Nuit de Lune appeals to collectors who prize complexity and contrast over safe, linear compositions.
