The beginning
Symphonie de Vert Exquise launched in 2020 as Elixir Attar's first foray into green chypre territory, a genre the brand had circled but never committed to. The composition is built around a fantasy landscape: a legendary jungle where violets, jasmine, and narcotic white florals grow wild alongside water plants and cut grass. The brand's own description frames it as an immersive walk through that space, from the damp earth underfoot to the zesty, rain-soaked canopy above. Galbanum and incense open the door, releasing a sharp green snap laced with resinous smoke that catches in the back of the throat before settling into the skin. From there the jungle takes shape in layers.
What separates this from the classic green chypres it nods toward is the incense note anchoring the top and the mitti attar grounding the base. The incense doesn't behave like the smoky church resin of Western perfumery; it arrives brighter, almost lemony at the edges, before turning warmer and slightly sweet as the galbanum cools. That tension between sharp green and resinous warmth is what gives the opening its pull. Once the florals come through, the incense steps back but never fully exits, and you can catch traces of it woven into the jasmine rather than sitting on top.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are loud. Galbanum cuts sharp, almost vegetal-aggressive, and the incense smolders underneath like something already burning in the next room. Water hyacinth cools the edges, and lime adds a spark that reads as citrus but functions more like static electricity. Within the first hour, the green sharpness folds back and the floral heart takes over. Iris leads here, powdery and cool, but it's quickly joined by a thicket of white florals: jasmine, tuberose, ylang-ylang, lily of the valley. Blue lotus and carnation push it toward the narcotic. This is the phase that surprises. It stops smelling like a chypre and starts smelling like a tropical garden at dusk. By hour three, the mitti attar arrives. That wet-earth, rain-on-clay mineral note is unmistakable and unmistakable. It's the base's anchor and the fragrance's signature. Oakmoss and orris root add chypre gravity, benzoin and styrax bring a sticky sweetness, and the musk softens everything into a close-to-skin warmth.
