The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
My NY arrived in 2014 as Donna Karan's declaration of urban identity, a fragrance meant to bottle the energy of the city that built the brand. The name says it all: not Donna Karan, not DKNY, but My NY. Personal. Possessive. Yours. Trudi Loren developed the composition in collaboration with IFF. The campaign face was Rita Ora, singer, songwriter. Dynamic. Unapologetic. Here. The composition opens with bright raspberry notes that carry a sharp green cut from galbanum, creating an unexpected moment of crispness within the sweet-fruity structure. Pink pepper adds a clean prickle in the opening phase, and within twenty minutes the galbanum recedes as the raspberry softens into something juicier and less insistent.
The galbanum is the tell. In a fragrance built on raspberry sweetness and vanilla warmth, that sharp green note arrives without warning, brief, almost jarring, then gone. It doesn't apologize for being there. It insists. The galbanum's green edge creates tension in the opening phase, breaking through the sweetness and preventing the composition from becoming background music. That green interruption stops the composition from becoming background music. It's a small risk, buried in the top notes, but it stops the composition from becoming background music.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and immediate, raspberry with a sharp green cut from the galbanum. Pink pepper adds a clean prickle. Within twenty minutes, the galbanum recedes and the raspberry softens into something juicier and less insistent. The heart takes over around the one-hour mark: jasmine and freesia bloom in a floral sweetness that feels more classic than the opening suggested, grounded by the orris root's powdery elegance. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Patchouli brings earthy depth, not heavy, but present, alongside warm vanilla absolute that stays close to the skin for hours. Musk and ambergris create a skin-warm base that lingers.
