The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ilio was born from a Mediterranean setting, a narrow cove where prickly pear cacti cluster, their blue-green pads heavy with fruit. Barbary figs ripen nearby, warmed by sea air. Lavender and lemongrass drift from a terrace at dusk. This sun-drenched landscape, and the warm breeze carrying it, became the foundation of Ilio, a fragrance that extends beyond its geography.
The scent draws from this coastal setting through Fabrice Pellegrin's interpretation. The prickly pear brings a juicy, almost melon-like sweetness that feels uncommon in perfumery. Iris adds powdery elegance, while jasmine weaves quietly beneath the surface. Bergamot opens the composition with crisp citrus brightness, evoking the Mediterranean immediately. The result is summer condensed, a moment of sun and warmth along the sea, captured in liquid form. The limited edition bottle, designed by Luke Edward Hall and illustrated by Erik Winkowski, reflects this Mediterranean essence, sun-drenched, weightless, warm.
The evolution
The scent arc is clean and satisfying. It opens bright and citrine from the bergamot, then the prickly pear blooms with a clean, dewy sweetness, not candied, just impossibly fresh. Jasmine and iris layer beneath, keeping everything grounded and refined rather than abstract. Hours later, that powdery iris stays close and intimate, a soft trace on skin that lingers quietly as a reminder of the Mediterranean sun.
Cultural impact
Ilio Limited Edition by Diptyque, launched in 2023, captures the essence of a Mediterranean summer through its prickly pear and iris pairing. The Erik Winkowski illustrations on the packaging reflect the brand's ongoing artistic collaborations. Community response has highlighted its light, fresh character and the unusual prickly pear note, with many noting it as a reliable everyday option, particularly for warm weather.
