The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Alexander Vreeland spent years tracing his grandmother's scent memories before launching Diana Vreeland Parfums in 2014. Absolutely Vital was among the earliest releases, composed by Yves Cassar with ingredients sourced from LMR in Grasse. The brief was simple: honor Diana's documented love of India and sandalwood. Cassar built the fragrance around Indian sandalwood as the structural heart, wrapping it in Turkish rose and Egyptian jasmine absolute, softening with myrrh and opoponax, and closing on vanilla. It was designed to translate a specific affection into something wearable.
What makes this composition distinctive is the deliberate use of powdery florals alongside a dominant sandalwood base. The Turkish rose and Egyptian jasmine absolute don't compete with the sandalwood. They soften it, create a sense of enclosure rather than projection. Myrrh and opoponax add a subtle bitter counterpoint, preventing the composition from reading as purely sweet. The vanilla in the drydown is what makes this worth the full wear. Not the opening. Not the heart. The vanilla drydown that arrives after 3-4 hours and turns the entire experience into something close, warm, and lasting.
The evolution
The sandalwood arrives immediately, milky and warm. No hesitation. No hesitation. Then the florals arrive within minutes, Turkish rose first, powdery and soft, followed by Egyptian jasmine absolute adding a waxy, narcotic sweetness. The myrrh introduces a subtle bitter counterpoint that some find almost medicinal in the first hour. That phase passes. By the second hour, the opoponax adds a balsamic sweetness that smooths everything together. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Sandalwood and vanilla merge into something warm and intimate, lasting 6-8 hours on most skin types. Close to the skin. Present without projecting. The kind of longevity that rewards the wearer who stays.
Cultural impact
Absolutely Vital draws from Diana Vreeland's documented love of India and sandalwood. The warm, intimate character makes it suited for evening occasions and date nights, where the vanilla drydown comes into its own. Moderate projection also means it works for professional settings. Spring and fall are its natural seasons, with the warm months providing the best expression of its character. The 6-8 hour longevity covers most occasions without reapplication.
