The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Forest & Soul arrived in 2023 as part of Daniel's Truth's oil perfume line, a 10ml format that places it firmly in the intimate, skin-close category of fragrance. The composition reads as a study in contrast, pairing marine and green notes against a powdery floral heart of jasmine, rose, violet, and freesia. From the first breath, there's a cool saline lift that catches the nose before the florals settle in, like stepping out of warm air into something fresher. The brand positions it as a dry floral composition with airy marine facets, the kind of scent that evokes clean linens and desert air rather than dense gardens. Freesia brings a faint green sweetness that bridges the watery top with the creamy heart, while violet lends that familiar powdery hush.
The note structure does something specific: it places marine and green top notes over a powdery heart, then anchors everything with sandalwood, amber, and white musk. The clove leaf tucked into the heart adds a faint warmth that keeps the violet and rose from going cold, a quiet structural choice that holds the drydown together. As the marine fades, the sandalwood begins to register with a soft, milky quality, not the heavy creamy sandalwood of older compositions but something drier, almost papery.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the greens and a distant marine hush, brief and bright before the florals take over. Jasmine, rose, violet, and freesia each carry their own recognizable weight, yet they share enough powdery DNA to feel like a single gesture. A community member has drawn a parallel to classic Ponds cold cream, and the comparison makes sense once the violet and rose settle into the clove leaf's quiet warmth. Over time, the marine and green retreat, and what's left is a soft sandalwood-and-musk base wrapped in amber. The base notes stretch into the longest phase of wear, sitting close to the skin and reading more like an aura than a sillage. Clove leaf continues to do its quiet work in the background, a trace of spice that keeps the powder from feeling flat or sterile.
Cultural impact
Wearers describe Forest & Soul as calling to mind vintage cold cream, a powdery floral musk that reads classic rather than trendy. One community member compared the drydown specifically to classic Ponds cold cream, and that association captures the soft, rounded, slightly sweet-clean quality that surfaces once the marine and green notes have receded. The jasmine, rose, violet, and clove leaf arrangement leans into that old-school floral territory without tipping into nostalgia, offering a take on the category that feels familiar yet considered.
