The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Santal Odeyar was released by Chopard in 2022 as part of its Gardens collection. The composition places sandalwood at its foundation, anchoring the entire structure. The opening brings tropical fruit forward, with mango as the leading note among the top accord. White florals take center stage in the heart, blooming across the skin and softening the initial sweetness without erasing it. The sandalwood then takes over, providing a creamy, persistent base that lingers throughout wear. The name Odeyar carries an almost ceremonial weight, suggesting dedication to its central material. The fragrance moves from a fruity, vibrant opening through a blooming floral heart before settling into the woody foundation that defines its character.
The opening of Santal Odeyar leads with ripe mango and Italian citrus. The four top notes create a chord of tropical sweetness that is simultaneously refreshing and enveloping. The heart then pivots to white florals, jasmine sambac, Indian jasmine auriculatum, Moroccan orange blossom, Turkish damask rose, that temper the fruit without erasing it. Jasmine and orange blossom form the backbone of this transition, bringing a green, slightly indolic presence that balances the sweetness. The rose adds a subtle spiced quality that prevents the florals from feeling purely delicate.
The evolution
The mango arrives immediately, ripe, tropical, almost edible. The opening reads like fruit left in the sun. The citrus layer prevents it from becoming overly sweet, adding just enough brightness to keep the composition from collapsing into syrup. The white florals begin to emerge, with jasmine and orange blossom blooming across the skin, softening the mango without replacing it. The combination is warm and enveloping. The sandalwood arrives as the florals recede, taking over the composition and providing a creamy, powdery drydown. The benzoin gives it a slightly resinous warmth that feels settled rather than loud in the final hours. Throughout wear, the fragrance maintains its tropical warmth while allowing the sandalwood to become increasingly present, creating a seamless transition from fruit through florals into wood.
Cultural impact
Santal Odeyar presents a mango-fruity-floral opening that carves a distinct path within the sandalwood category. The mango note provides a tropical sweetness that feels both refreshing and enveloping, creating an immediate contrast to more traditional woody openings. The combination of fruit, florals, and sandalwood positions the fragrance as something that prioritizes warmth and richness over restraint. The tropical opening remains the defining element of the composition, setting the tone for everything that follows.
