The beginning
Bvlgari Man In Black landed in 2014 as a fire-and-smoke entry in the Italian house's men's lineup, composed by Alberto Morillas. Morillas is one of the most prolific perfumers of the modern era, with a catalog that runs from Acqua di Gio to Flowerbomb. The brief here was elemental: the radiant energy, hypnotic movement, and primal intensity of fire. Not a candle. Not a fireplace. The thing itself, from first spark to smoldering embers, translated into a dense, leathery oriental that refuses to be polite about its warmth. The composition reads like a controlled burn rather than a flash fire, building slowly through layers of spice, smoke, and resin until the whole thing settles into a dark, almost molten glow.
The move is the opening. Rum and tobacco up top is already party territory, but Bvlgari pairs that with a tuberose heart, which is unusual for a men's fragrance pitched as smoky and dark. Here, the tuberose acts as unexpected lift, a creamy, almost narcotic brightness that keeps the composition from collapsing into pure sugar. The base of guaiac wood, tonka, and benzoin does the heavy lifting, but without that floral tension, the whole thing would read as just another sweet oriental.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes hit with a bright, almost startling sweetness, the rum and tobacco arriving together like a match struck in a dark room.
