The beginning
Always Now is part of Bottega Veneta's Alta collection, released in 2026. The name suggests something immediate, something happening in this breath rather than next. The composition, built by Mathieu Nardin with the Mane house, reads the same way: a stack of green-mandarin, clementine, bergamot, basil, ginger, and orange in the opening, followed by mint, neroli, petitgrain, and Figolide. It anchors on Madagascan vetiver, Virginia cedar wood, and musk. No one note is meant to dominate. The whole point is simultaneity. Everything, always, right now. The structure of the scent echoes that idea, layering brightness and greenness at the top, aromatic florals and that fig character in the middle, and then a woody, musky base that holds everything in place without pulling focus.
The composition's most distinctive move is the tension between the basil and the Figolide molecule. Basil brings that sharp, slightly peppery green lift, the kind that makes Italian kitchens smell like memory. Figolide, a captive synthetic, adds a milky-sweet fig quality without any actual fruit or sweetness shouting through. Together they create something vegetal and creamy at once, like fig leaves warmed by sun rather than the fruit itself. The supporting cast matters too. Green mandarin, clementine, and orange peel give the opening its brightness without making it sharp or soapy. Mint in the heart cools the composition, keeps it from getting too sweet or too herbal.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a citrus flood, and the sensation is generous rather than sharp. Green mandarin and clementine arrive together, with bergamot threading underneath to give the opening its classic cologne architecture. Basil and ginger follow almost immediately, layering in a green-peppery heat that keeps the whole thing from collapsing into yet another generic citrus splash.
