The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Come with Me belongs to the Nods to Venice collection, Bottega Veneta's ongoing olfactory conversation with the city that shaped the house's identity. Perfumer Alexandra Carlin built this fragrance around an unusual tension: the refined elegance of Italian bergamot and French orris butter, held against something rougher, more grounded. Carrot seed and artichoke are not typical perfumery materials. Their inclusion suggests Carlin wanted a counterweight to the powdery violet softness, a vegetable-earthiness that roots the composition in something tangible, almost agricultural. The name itself is an invitation. Not a statement. A reach.
The combination of carrot seed and artichoke in a luxury fragrance is unusual enough to require explanation. Carrot seed brings a dry, slightly mineral greenness, the smell of something pulled from earth rather than grown in a garden. Artichoke adds a subtle vegetable bitterness, an almost thistly quality that most perfumers avoid. Together, they create an opening that feels unexpectedly raw against the powdery iris that follows. This is not an accident. The vegetable notes function as a foil to the orris butter's violet softness, preventing the composition from becoming merely delicate.
The evolution
The opening arrives with Italian bergamot, a bright, citrusy brightness that reads as clean, almost soapy for the first few minutes. Beneath it, carrot seed introduces a green, mineral quality that immediately complicates the bergamot's cheerfulness. The artichoke follows, adding a subtle vegetable-earthiness that sits uncomfortably with the citrus top notes. It is an unusual opening, deliberately so. Within 20-30 minutes, the orris root begins to assert itself. The powdery violet emerges, dry, elegant, and slightly powdery in the way that only orris butter can achieve. Jasmine joins to add warmth and creaminess, while cabreuva wood introduces a soft, woody undertone. The vegetable notes do not disappear. They retreat, grounding the powdery iris and preventing it from becoming too delicate. The drydown is where Come with Me becomes itself. The leather note strengthens, becoming more present and animalic. Vetiver adds earthy, smoky depth, a rootiness that echoes the vegetable opening but now feels intentional, structured.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 launch, Come with Me has attracted those seeking something outside the expected. The vegetable-earthy opening (carrot seed, artichoke) divides opinion, some find it unsettling, others find it the most interesting part. What unites wearers is an appreciation for restraint. This is not a fragrance that announces itself. It asks you to lean in.
