The unusual move here is the ginger. Most Riviera-coded compositions lean on neroli and bergamot alone, which can read thin or soapy. Guerlain doubles the spice, with Guatemalan cardamom for warmth and both Ivory Coast and Madagascan ginger for that clean, almost-effervescent heat. The result is a heart that doesn't dissolve into flowers. The base is where the composition earns its "Absolue" designation. Cypriol, also called nagarmotha, brings a smoky, earthy root note that anchors the citrus from below. Frankincense resin adds a cool, resinous incense. Black tea contributes a dry, tannic bitterness.

The evolution

The first ten minutes are almost aggressive in their clarity. Tomato leaf hits first, green and sharp, then finger lime pops with those tiny citrus caviar beads of tart juice. Moroccan neroli threads through it, adding a faint orange blossom sweetness that keeps the spice from going sharp. Guatemalan cardamom adds a dry, almost peppery warmth below.
