Why it exists.
The beginning
Event Horizon arrived in 2007 as part of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Bewitching Brews collection. The name borrows from astrophysics: the boundary around a black hole beyond which nothing can return. Elizabeth Moriarty Barrial, the brand's owner and perfume maker, translated that concept into scent: a composition so heavy and complete it functions like its own gravitational field. The official description calls it a disconcerting scent, heavy and oppressive, through. That language is deliberate, not poetic embellishment. Five notes form the entire structure of the composition, a brutal economy that offers no entry point beyond its central gravity. There are no top notes to soften arrival, no citrus or green accords to offer relief. Every element pulls inward, reinforcing the weight.
The composition is ruthlessly focused. Five notes, no floral pretense, no citrus lift to soften the landing. Opium sits at the center, carrying a smoky, dreamy quality that defines the composition's mood, flanked by labdanum's dark amber warmth and opoponax's sweet-resinous bite. Benzoin adds a sweetness that rounds out the edges of the smoke without lightening it. Black orchid provides the only floral shadow in an otherwise resin-and-smoke monolith, a counterpoint that keeps the blend from collapsing into pure incense. The absence of bright or green notes is the point.
The evolution
The opening is immediate and almost confrontational, the opium and benzoin hitting together with a sweetness that quickly darkens as labdanum's amber weight settles in. Shortly after application, the composition shifts from sweet-resinous to fully smoke-laden, the opoponax adding a bitter, almost medicinal edge that deepens the incense character of the blend. This phase lasts longer than expected, holding dense resin smoke with the black orchid occasionally surfacing as a cool note that somehow grounds the composition. As the hours pass, the smoke softens but never fully lifts. The drydown becomes a warm amber skin-scent, benzoin and labdanum fusing into a clinging resin that holds to fabric long after the top notes have faded. On skin the intensity moderates; on a sweater or scarf it persists well into the following day.

The composition sits comfortably among the house's most discussed resin blends, a favorite for collectors who want something with genuine weight behind it.
