The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fae arrived in 2004 as part of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's Bewitching Brews collection. Elizabeth Moriarty Barrial, listed as brand owner and perfume maker for BPAL, is the hand behind the formula. The fragrance draws its name from the fae of folklore: the trickster-folk who live at the edges of hedgerows and offer bargains that taste sweeter than they are. Fae wears that inheritance directly, a composition built around the quiet tension of something that looks like charm and carries a sharper undertone. Peach and bergamot offer an inviting, almost sunny opening, but oakmoss and white musk anchor the structure, lending a cool chypre skeleton that keeps the sweetness from spilling over.
What makes Fae distinctive is the way it holds itself in suspension. Bergamot opens like daylight through a window, but peach and heliotrope quickly pull the temperature down into something more ambiguous. The heliotrope is the hinge: an almond-husked, powdery note that hovers between innocence and something narcotic, sweet but never cloying. Oakmoss does the deeper work, lending a chypre skeleton that keeps the fruit from collapsing into syrup.
The evolution
On skin, Fae opens with bergamot's brief, bright cut, a citrus note that reads almost green before it disappears within the first fifteen minutes. Peach arrives fast and lingers, sweet but never cloying, tempered by heliotrope's dry, almond-edged powder. The heart holds this hush for hours: fruity, musky, faintly vanillic in the way heliotrope tends to read, with the heliotrope acting as a kind of soft pivot between the brighter top notes and what comes later. Then the oakmoss surfaces. It doesn't crash in; it seeps, lending a cool, forest-floor quality that reorganizes everything above it and gives the composition its gravity. The white musk carries the drydown, staying close to skin through the long middle hours, and what remains at the end of the day is a faint mossy sweetness, almost imperceptible, like a memory of something you wore to a particular afternoon.
Cultural impact
Fae sits within BPAL's Bewitching Brews lineup, a collection that gathers compositions under a single thematic banner. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want something quietly otherworldly: a scent that hints at the uncanny without shouting about it, built around bergamot, peach, heliotrope, oakmoss, and white musk. Within the wider indie perfume conversation, it has become a recognizable reference point for collectors familiar with the house's catalog, a composition that many wearers return to as a touchstone for how the Bewitching Brews line can read: delicate on the surface, anchored by something cooler underneath.
