The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Bewitched was released in 2004 by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab as part of the Bewitching Brews series, a collection of limited-edition fragrances the house has built around seasonal and atmospheric concepts. The composition draws on blackberry and wild berries, paired with sage, musk, and green tea, a set of materials that blend fruit, herb, and clean vegetal freshness into something that sits just outside the usual seasonal categories. It's a scent that doesn't apologize for being a little strange, a little uncanny, carrying a warmth that feels more like an indoor evening than an outdoor autumn.
What makes this composition structurally interesting is the way it builds its warmth without leaning on the usual suspects. There's no vanilla, no amber, no oud doing the heavy lifting in the base. Instead, the drydown is musk, a clean and skin-like material that keeps the fruit from collapsing into something syrupy. The sage does the aromatic, slightly green work that most fragrances outsource to lavender or rosemary, and that choice gives Bewitched a distinctive herbal character.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are the loudest Bewitched gets, and even then it's more of a murmur than a shout. Blackberry leads, dark and wine-like, the way ripe fruit smells just before it tips over into something deeper and more fermented. Wild berries push in from the sides, adding a brambly, almost jammy sweetness, while green tea sits underneath like steam rising from a cup left on a table. The sage arrives quickly, and that's the point. Two hours in, the berries have mellowed into something softer, still present but less sharp, and the green tea becomes more noticeable, lending a calm, slightly bitter counterpoint. By hour four, the sage takes over, grounding the whole composition with its dry, herbal pull, and the musk begins to surface, warming the blend and pulling it close to the skin. The berries are still there, now reading more like a memory than a presence.
Cultural impact
Bewitched sits within the Bewitching Brews series, a seasonal grouping that has become one of Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab's most recognizable collections. It's the kind of fragrance that found its audience through indie perfume communities and word-of-mouth among wearers drawn to atmospheric, unconventional scents. Wearers tend to describe it as a cold-weather companion, something that belongs with thick sweaters, candlelight, and rooms that smell like dried herbs. Compared to mainstream autumnal releases, Bewitched is less about gourmand sweetness and more about atmosphere, closer to a mood than a flavor.
