The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Birkholz launched Ocean Hills in 2017, and the German house built it as an interpretation of rough seas pounding coastal reefs. The founder composed it as a Woody Chypre that catches that landscape without literal marine notes, painting the colors and shapes of rock, water, and salt-stunted vegetation through scent alone. The vision: a cliff ledge where the wind is so strong the face tingles. Foam breaks below. The greenery bends sideways. The stone stays put. The release sits within the brand's Classic Collection, the early lineup that established Birkholz's approach of turning personal geography into wearable form.
What makes Ocean Hills unusual is its refusal to cheat. The composition achieves coastline through a structure built on bergamot-lime freshness at the top, an aromatic lavender-geranium heart cushioned by crisp apple and guaiac wood, and a chypre base of oakmoss, patchouli, cedar, and a measured touch of leather. That last note matters.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to the top. Lime and bergamot cut through sharp and clean, with mint adding a cold snap and pink pepper a quick sting of spice. There's a soapy edge here, almost cologne-like in its precision, and the freshness feels less sweet than bracing. This is the moment of arriving at the coast, jacket zipped, face exposed. Around the forty-minute mark, the apple surfaces, fruit that's been chilled by the wind rather than ripened in any sun. Lavender and geranium settle in, giving the composition an aromatic backbone that softens the citrus without dulling it. Guaiac wood adds a faint smokiness, like distant chimney smoke crossing the cliffs. By hour two, the chypre base takes over. Oakmoss and patchouli create that mossy, earthy undertone that anchors the whole thing to stone rather than sea. Cedar keeps it dry. The leather surfaces more clearly now, dry and suede-soft rather than thick. The citrus fades to a memory. What's left is woody, mineral, and quietly green, like the smell of the cliff path an hour after you've descended.
Cultural impact
Ocean Hills sits within Birkholz's Classic Collection, the early lineup that established the house's approach of translating specific landscapes and memories into wearable compositions. Within the fragrance community, it has earned a reputation as a distinctive take on the Woody Chypre category, offering wearers a rocky, mineral freshness that distinguishes it from the sweeter, more conventional profiles common to many mainstream aquatic releases. The fragrance has found its strongest following among wearers who want a crisp, rocky freshness without the synthetic marine sweetness that dominates much of the broader aquatic market.
