The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Volakas takes its name from a mountain range in Greece, a limestone landscape whose quarried marble has become its own kind of geographic signature. Aurora Scents bottled that contrast for the Marble Collection in 2022, translating Greek terrain into scent. Volakas fits the house's aromatic, woody direction, a Leather fragrance for men built around the kind of green-spice interplay that gives the composition its pull. Galbanum and violet leaf set a bitter, vegetal ceiling. Rosemary and thyme soften the edges. Cumin, cardamom, and pink pepper drag the temperature, warming what the herbs try to keep cool. Iris and geranium powder the spices enough to keep them wearable, and the base locks in with vetiver, cedarwood, oakmoss, leather, patchouli, and incense.
What makes the composition worth talking about is how the green and the warm don't take turns. They overlap. Galbanum and violet leaf give the opening that sharp, almost metallic bitterness, but rosemary and thyme round it into something less aggressive. Then the heart pulls in a different direction entirely: cumin, cardamom, and pink pepper bring a sweaty, lived-in heat that no amount of herbal top notes can disguise. Iris and geranium do the bridging work, powdering the spices just enough to keep them wearable.
The evolution
The opening leans fully green. Galbanum leads, sharp and almost vegetal, the way crushed leaves smell when the air is cold. Violet leaf sits just behind it, bringing a wet, earthy bitterness that makes the rosemary and thyme feel more structural than aromatic. There's no sweetness to ease you in. The opening is honest about what it is. From there, the spices arrive in sequence. Cumin is the loudest, bringing that warm, almost dirty quality that divides opinion. Cardamom and pink pepper add lift, and nutmeg rounds the edges. The iris shows up here too, quiet, powdery, doing the unglamorous work of making the spice sit still. The herbs don't vanish. They just get pushed down a layer, audible underneath the cumin like a bassline under a melody. As the hours pass, the base takes over and stays. Vetiver and cedarwood give it a dry, woody backbone.
Cultural impact
Volakas fits the profile of a fragrance for someone who already knows what they want from an aromatic. The green-spice-to-leather arc rewards attention rather than demanding it, and the composition holds its shape through a full wearing without collapsing into something softer or sweeter. It won't be the loudest in the room, but it'll be the one that lasts. The green opening reads as confident rather than aggressive, and the spice phase in the middle carries enough warmth to carry the scent through cooler weather. By the time the base settles in, the leather and oakmoss give it an old-school weight that grounds everything above it.
